NEHS HIGHLANDER STUDENT NEWS

Advisory Competition!
IB diploma students will be visiting each advisory at some point in the period and asking for any items that staff or students have brought in. They are going to use a point system on a scale of 1 pts. for small items (plate, bowl, utensil), up to 10 pts. for larger items (toaster, sheet set, etc.). The students will record your items and points each advisory and then I will report out the totals by the end of each week. All items must be turned in by our last advisory of the month on Thursday, November 21.
NEHS Theater Presents "The Outsiders"
We're kicking off the year with a rousing dramatic production of The Outsiders, based on the classic novel by S.E. Hinton.

   Hello Senior Families,
Now is the time for seniors planning on continuing their education to be submitting college applications and applying for financial aid. Below is some information to help as you navigate the next couple months:
   COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS:
Apply to colleges of your choice via Common App or direct to the institution
Early Action Deadline: November 1st for most schools. Students who have applied and have a complete application file will be notified by mid-December. We suggest all students apply Early Action if possible!

Regular Application Deadline: normally in January of February for most schools (i.e. UO = Jan. 15th; OSU = Feb. 3). Students wishing to receive full consideration for admission and aim to have access to the greatest set of scholarship opportunities should apply by this date.

Transcript Request for Colleges: Students must request their high school transcripts through Naviance. Instructions: Access Naviance here and "Continue with the Single Sign On" using your 4j credentials. Under the "Colleges" tab, choose "Colleges I'm Applying To". Add your colleges and request all 3 transcripts: Initial, Mid-year, Final.  Need help? See your counselor or email/swing by the College Career Center.

Lane Community College: Students interested in attending Lane Community College in Fall 2025 can apply anytime after this Saturday, October 26th, when the application portal opens for next fall. There is a $25 application fee this year. If you would like a waiver to avoid the $25 charge, see Catherine in the College and Career Center for the special code.

   FINANCIAL AID:

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): All US citizens and eligible noncitizens seeking financial aid help to attend trade school, community college, or 4-year university should fill out the FAFSA form - here! FAFSA will open in December. The student and a parent will have to create a FSA ID (username and password) - you can do this now! Eugene Public Library Cards

Great news! All Eugene School District 4J students receive their own Eugene Public Library (EPL) card as part of a partnership with Eugene Public Library! Library cards were delivered to all 4J students last year and will be automatically renewed yearly until they graduate or leave the district.

New library cards are being offered to all new students and kindergarteners this year. If your student has not received a card, please contact or visit Eugene Public Library.

Below is information regarding EPL student cards.

Student cards:

  • Provide immediate access to Eugene Public Library's online resources and the ability to borrow five physical items at a time.

    • Online resources include ebooks, audiobooks, research information, live homework help by professional tutors, streaming movies including documentaries and instructional videos, music, and more.

    • Physical items include books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, art and technology tools, games, educational toys, puppets and more.

  • Are free of charge, including for students who live outside the City of Eugene.

  • Can be upgraded to a standard library card with higher borrowing limits at no charge.

  •  Are automatically issued to all K-12 students enrolled at 4J neighborhood and alternative schools unless they or their parents choose not to participate. Charter schools are not included.

  • Are automatically renewed each school year for continuing 4J students. (Please ignore any recent emails asking that students renew their cards!)

New cards will be issued to students joining the district (kindergarteners and new students).

The initial account password is the student’s 4J ID number. We encourage patrons to change their password upon first logging into their account and record it in a safe place. Teachers, 4J librarians, and school secretaries can assist with ID numbers as needed. Please note that Eugene Public Librarians cannot access 4J student ID numbers.

4J students who already have a standard Eugene Public Library card may choose to keep and use both cards or cancel one of their cards.

Please join us for our next planning meeting on Wednesday,  November 13th at 6 pm in the Library. We have some very important decision to make at this meeting and would like as much input as possible.

If you ordered Pie from our Willamette Vallye Pie Co. Fundraiser, THANK YOU! Pies wil lbe ready for pick up at 2:30 pm on WednesdayNovember 20th in the school cafeteria. We are asking that the students or parents pick them up as close to 2:30 pm as possible as the fruit pies are delivered frozen and must get back into a freezer until they are ready to be heated up. We do not want them to sit out too long and thaw out.

December 7th is the North Eugene dance Team and Boosters Winter Bazaar from 9 am to 4 pm. The Grad Night has been offered an opportunity to do gift wrapping for donations at this event. We still have some open time slots to fill (2 hour time slots). Please reach out to Keri Brown if you are interested in volunteering. Students and Parents both are welcomed. If you have extra gift wrapping, ribbon, bows, or tape, we would appreciate donations as well!

We are always looking for more participation in fundraising, organizing, prize collections, etc. Please reach out to Denise Velasco, Rochelle Suthers, or Keri Brown if you would like to be involved more.
