AVID is not just another program…
at its heart,
AVID is a philosophy:
Hold students accountable to the highest standards,
provide academic and social support,
and they will rise to the challenge.
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID Elective is the core of the AVID Secondary program. North has one section of AVID Elective for each grade level. It targets students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. These are students in the academic middle – B, C, and D students – who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Often, they are the first in their families to attend college and come from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
AVID places these students on the college track. It helps them succeed in North’s International Baccalaureate Program Courses and prepare for college entrance exams. AVID students spend one period a day learning organizational and study skills, developing critical thinking, learning to ask probing questions, receiving academic help from peers and college tutors, and participating in enrichment and motivational activities. They also visit colleges to learn about different programs and gain inspiration to make their college dreams a reality.
